December 2024

Why are album releases on Fridays?

As you’ve probably noticed, cinema releases are usually on Wednesdays, and album releases are usually on Fridays… But do you know why?

The most famous artists can maximize their chart potential by releasing their music on the last days of the week. The Billboard chart takes into account sales from Friday to Thursday, so a Friday release benefits from seven full days of charting.

The second reason is that artists don’t want to take the risk of not being included in their playlists on major streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music or Deezer on Fridays, as these platforms have a prescriptive value with users and a commercial objective in their sights. This is why the week’s album releases are on Fridays (with a few exceptions).

Who sold the most albums in 2023?

Unsurprisingly, it was Taylor Swift who sold the most albums this year, with the reissue of «1989 (Taylor’s Version)». Although the album was released at the end of the year (October 27), this didn’t stop the American artist from achieving the best album sales performance of the year. Better still, she achieved a hat-trick, with «Midnights» and «Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)» completing the podium.
